This is one of many prestigious competitions designed for any aspiring manga writers and artists. The theme they devised for comic entries to reference was the term "Ganbare", which is Japanese for "good luck", "well done" or "go for it". This 8-page piece was my entry for 2012. The Young Veteran tells the story about a soldier who had fought in the war and gives the account of his experiences, especially the moment of being at the brink of death and how he overcame adversity to survive on the battlefield. Unfortunately it never got shortlisted, but it's personally been rewarding seeing it from early concepts through to completion. Rather than adopting the standard 'anime'-handsome-guy look, I decided to create a version of the character with semi-realistic facial features.
